The jewel of prince islands

Situated just off the east coast of the island of Lefkada and only a 25 minute ferry ride from the port of Nydri, Meganisi is the biggest of the Ionian group of islands colloquially known as “prince islands” and also known as islands of Televoes (named after an ancient peoples in the area who had mastered the seas).

With its picturesque fjords and calm coves, Meganisi is a boater’s paradise and the turquoise waters of this part of the Ionian sea indeed attract numerous sailboats, yachts and sunbathers alike. The weather from mid-April all the way through the end of September and even early October is splendid and combined with the unspoiled nature of both the terrestrial and marine environment of the island makes Meganisi a dream destination.

There are three villages on the island: Spartochori, Vathy and Katomeri. Numerous taverns dot the waterfront of Vathy making it the busier of the three villages, while strolling through the quaint small streets of Katomeri and Spartochori makes for a relaxing experience. Several small beaches around the island, many accessible by road, others accessible only by boat, offer magnificent turquoise waters for swimming and diving. And the rocky caves around the island are legendary for their awe inspiring domes and indeed are part of legends themselves, like the Cave of Papanikolis, named after the WWII allied submarine that was mooring in it after striking enemy fleet and then evading the most skilled sub hunters of the axis forces seeking refuge in Meganisi.

Meganisi Island is the best kept secret of those looking to enjoy the Greek island experience of old times with all the comforts of modern accommodations and is sought after by those who seek relaxation and a superb natural environment away from busy tourist destinations.

Getting there

Meganisi is accessible from all the main nearby islands, namely Lefkada, Ithaca and Kefalonia. Since Lefkada is an island that is accessible by road, that makes Meganisi a very appealing island destination with only a short boat ride to get there from Lefkada.

In addition, there are also “water taxi” services from Lefkada to Meganisi if one doesn’t need to transport a car or wants to catch a ride outside of ferry schedule. Details on such transfer services can be found here: seataximeganisi.gr
